Ong Pagoda Hoi An, also known as Quan Cong temple, was built in 1653, this was the most prosperous trading period of Hoi An trading port.
In the seventeenth century, Hoi An was a bustling international trading port, a meeting place for merchant ships from different countries around the world. Many Chinese merchants are coming here to trade and choose Hoi An as their second homeland. Therefore, they have built temples, pagodas, shrines … to serve their spiritual life, Ong Pagoda is one of them.
The temple worships the talented general of the Three Kingdoms period, Quan Van Truong (Quan Vu), he is the model and symbol of the noble life philosophy of people at that time: Nghia – Trung – Tin – Dung. Therefore, the worship of Quan Cong is to respect and praise the spirit of righteousness and integrity, so that people can follow a good example.
The pagoda has been restored 6 times in the years: 1753, 1783, 1827, 1864, 1904 and 1966 and was granted the National Historic-Cultural Monument on November 29, 1991. Although the contours may be distorted. It fades a bit over the years, but the overall look is still very special.
Every year, Ong Pagoda organizes many special festivals, especially the spring festival. Every year at the beginning of the year, locals and tourists from neighboring provinces come here to visit spring, pray for peace and luck in life. Especially to ask for a favorable business and trade. Visitors can write their wishes on small pieces of paper and hang them on the incense rings in the lobby.
In addition, visitors can participate in the festival of Ong, which takes place on January 16. Or the ceremony of Via Quan Hien Thanh on June 24, calendar year. These are all big events with many unique activities.
Ong Pagoda Hoi An is a work bearing the imprint of classical Chinese architecture. The overall pagoda consists of 4 buildings: vestibule, main hall and 2 left-right. The four main buildings of this temple were built in the style of the Chinese script Khau. The roofs are roofed in the style of tube roofs with colored enamel.
The point that impresses visitors is the main hall. Here is placed a majestic statue of Quan Van Truong, majestic face, sharp eyes. He wears a dragon-embroidered plank with brocade. Next to the statue of Quan Van Truong are two statues of Chau Thuong and Quan Binh. These are all loyal to him.
On the left and right sides of the temple, there is a horse on each side. On the left is a white horse, on the right is Quan Van Truong’s favorite black horse, given to him by Tao Thao.
In particular, the pagoda also preserves a poem by Xuan Cong Nguyen Nghiem (father of Nguyen Du) and 2 paintings by Uong Si Cu and Nguyen Lenh Tan. These are historical relics from the 18th century in the Trinh – Nguyen dynasties remaining until today.
